Whitewater Rafting

Newsletter – Wednesday, September 1, 2010

Is it just me or has anyone else had a great summer? Part of my enthusiasm is because my children are really coming into an age where we share so many interests. Fortunately for me, I can still keep up most of the time. Last week I took Sam, Grace, a few friends, and the multi-talented Zach Frederick (our network manager) whitewater rafting on the Youghiogheny River at Ohiopyle.

Zach brought his kayak and the rest of us hopped in a raft and we headed down the most popular stretch of whitewater in Western PA. It has been a while since the last time I paddled the river, so I was just as thrilled as my kids who were rafting for the first time. Sam was plainly intent on being thrown out of the boat and Grace was testing her new underwater camera. Both got their way! Our last adventure was stopping at a fairly deep hole on the river and jumping from a rock that was at least 16 feet high. My mother would faint if she saw me jump off the ‘cliff’ just because Zach did - not to mention me telling my kids to do it too. Anyway, I hope you have some great ‘summer memories’ and stories to tell. If I am lucky, I’ll get to hear a few of yours.

As insurance professionals, what we do every day is not unlike whitewater rafting. You need your crew to work together to make it safely through the rapids. Sometimes things move too fast and other times they move too slowly and there are definitely control issues to deal with. But an expert boater will advise you to work with the water not against it. This about sums up what our office has been like this summer.

The Tuscano Agency is known for our ability to place your atypical risk. Sometimes it is a specific risk that has an unusual exposure and sometimes it is a difficult class that your markets won’t consider. On risks like this, carriers may add endorsements to the policy to manage their exposure and you will have to ‘navigate’ these restrictions with expertise. When possible, coverage should be bought back and in order to do that, a professional underwriter is going to engage you in the process – from asking for the right apps to digging deeper into the operations of a commercial client. It makes no sense to sell your client a cheap policy that has gaping holes in coverage. You wouldn’t send them down the river with holes in their raft would you?

We may not always have the cheapest policy, and we might not have the latest ‘hot’ market on the scene, but year after year Tuscano provides you with expert underwriting and superior customer service to back it up. We search the marketplace on every account you send us to uncover the broadest coverage options at the most reasonable cost, and our help in navigating the marketplace comes without reservations. That is our Tuscano ‘CAN Do It’ pledge to you.

As summer winds down, be on the lookout for the ‘C’ word. That’s right – change. I have been challenged by my managers as to why we are only emailing our mid-month newsletter and not emailing this end-of-month letter as well. So, we will continue to ‘snail’ mail our newsletter with the accounting statements at the end of every month, but now we will also email it in the interest of getting it into the hands of more of you who want to read it. If you can’t stand getting one more email, just let us know and we will be happy to take you off the distribution list.

Happy Labor Day to everyone – enjoy the long summer weekend!
