Maglite Inspired

Newsletter – Friday, October 1, 2010

Yesterday on the drive in to work, I heard a great story on the radio about the company that makes the Maglite flashlight. Mag Instrument Inc. is a company based in California that actually manufactures their products 100% in the US (which was the reason they were featured in the article). My ears always perk up when I hear about companies who are committed to American manufacturing – I suppose that is because Bill Tuscano was a ‘Be American, Buy American’ kind of guy.

Anthony Maglica is the company’s 79 year-old founder and current leader. He is passionate about preserving jobs and keeping production in-house. How does he manage to do this and keep the wholesale price of the Maglite flashlight the same as it was in 1979? The answer is innovation, automation, and passion. Some companies have chosen to export their jobs, but at great personal sacrifice, Anthony Maglica has not. His commitment extends beyond words – he is in the factory every day checking in with his employees and working to create new product lines. Anthony Maglica is a true inspiration to me; everyone on my Christmas list this year will be getting Maglite flashlights!

One topic of discussion that frequently comes up during our management team meetings is the fact that Tuscano is often seen as a generalist when it comes to wholesale business. Many of our peers have carved out niches specializing in one line of business or another. While it may be easier to get attention by calling yourself a specialist, the fact remains that sitting in a garage doesn’t make you a car.

In reality, it is the people at Tuscano who are the specialists. Ask Kelli about a truck and she will talk your ear off about trucking business. If you happen to call Tim about Architects and Engineers, he will give you a laundry list of coverage highlights and exposures to pay attention to. Nadine and her team in personal lines are excited about things that go ‘Zoom Zoom’. And, even though he is kind of new at it, Matt can talk beauty ‘shop’ with the girls and the boys!

We have no lack of markets to go head to head with the so-called specialty players, so how do we hope to gain attention and market share? I have staked our reputation on our service. We don’t just make a promise to get the quote out the door. We promise that we care about what you care about – professionalism, responsiveness, and the ability to compete and win.

Now that summer is over and we are headed towards the end of the year, keep us in mind for your seasonal business. Whether it is short-term or long term, we have great markets for writing a corn maze or haunted house. Christmas tree lots or holiday events & shows are another favorite. Though I hate to get ahead of the holidays, I know your customer is out there shopping for their coverage now. So give us a call or check online for a whole bag of tools to write this business – and any other ‘special needs’ account that comes across your desk!
