I have a new theory and I think this one just might prove to be true – youngest children (I fall into this category) have a harder time growing up. My sister calls it the Peter Pan syndrome. Regardless, I find myself always thinking of life in terms of my childhood!
My memory of growing up in Western PA is of having four distinct seasons: trees changed color on September 1st and all their leaves were on the ground by October 30th. The snow started to fall on December 1st and it was gone for good on March 31st;. April 1st the weather would warm up, it would rain until May 31st and then everything would be green and the flowers would be in full bloom. Summer started the day school let out and it was always hot and sunny. I know this because my mother sent us to the municipal pool every day to get us out of her hair.
Wouldn’t insurance be grand if we could put all of our activities and exposures into neat little buckets and call it a day? Some wholesalers have done quite well for themselves by becoming specialists and carving out a niche. Tuscano, however, was founded and built on the premise that we can be (almost) all things to our customers – a pretty lofty goal, I know. But Peter Pan would say “I Believe” and so we do.
Which brings up a sore point – my underwriters are understandably discouraged when they are asked to “just give me a number so I can show the client that their premium is good.” If you are on a fishing expedition with no intention of giving us a shot to write the account, please do me a favor and stay away from my Neverland. On the other hand, we love a challenge and will do everything we can when there is an opportunity to help you place a piece of business. When you don’t know where to go, or if you know your carriers will not write the class, pick up the phone or drop us an email – it can be any line of business at all. Sure there are a handful of things we do not work on, like aviation or disability, but Tuscano underwriters are clever and resourceful when you tell them what you need to get the job done.
Speaking of clever and resourceful, don’t overlook our professional liability team. Debbie, Dina, Robin, and Tim are doing a great job handling the most interesting and unusual, in addition to the typical accounts. Everything from Surgical Centers, Fund Managers, Dog Trainers, and Bloggers. There is nothing that they will not go the extra mile on for you.
Last week my daughter told me “you don’t really have a summer because you still have to work”. I told her that just means I have to work harder to make time for making summer fun. We came up with a list that I think will help Grace and Sam keep their inner ‘Peter Pan’ alive. I recommend that you make time and take time this summer to do the same. I will leave you with a poignant quote from Peter Pan:
“He put them [dreams] in a drawer. And sometimes, late at night, we take them out and admire them. But it gets harder and harder to close the drawer... He does. And that is why he is brave”.

I believe in: fairies, the power of good, never growing up, and Tuscano CAN Do It!
