Won't you be my neighbor?

Newsletter – Friday, September 16, 2011

Teri and I have finally arrived. Yes, we have reached that stage of parenthood where we are relegated to being the taxi driver and the banker. Though Teri does more of the shuttling, and I do more of the banking, I do occasionally come off the bench to provide relief. And while the kids, ear buds in place, are either playing on the PSP (PlayStation to the non-parentals) or listening to their iPod, I am left having a conversation with myself that goes something like: “So Sam, Grace, what did you discuss in school today that was interesting?”

Maybe I’m not a normal dad because I do dislike a quiet car ride. I want to have conversations with my kids and if they don’t start one, I will.  I’ll bring up politics, “How about that Tea Party?” or sports, “How about those Pittsburgh Pirates and their record 19 losing seasons?”  Mixing up the conversation is another way to get someone’s attention – like when Grace fires back at me “So, Dad, how much insurance did you sell today?” Ultimately, I want to give them the gift of conversation and the ability to listen with empathy.

Mixing it up a little bit further – How much professional liability have you sold recently? If you find that professional liability coverage and forms can be challenging, then I would encourage you to have a conversation with one of our extremely talented underwriters – Debbie, Robin, Dina, or Tim. They can walk you through every step of the process of writing a professional account. And while many policies can be simple enough, everyone could use some help on that complicated A&E account, that unusual Lawyers Professional for in-house counsel, or Medical Malpractice for the distressed medical professional risk that you may see from time to time. Not sure how to explain Extended Reporting period or Retro Date to a client? Then stop trying figure it out on your own. Tuscano underwriters will take the time to walk you through the process and help you address your client’s needs.

I have often heard it said by people who had the opportunity to meet Fred Rogers, that one of the most amazing things about the man was his ability to make a person feel special. Even if you were in a room full of people, when you were talking to him, it was like you were the only person there.  Here was a man who was a celebrity and when you were with him, he made you feel like the important one.  Let’s remember to do that when we are lucky enough to have conversations with our kids, spouses, parents, co-workers, and neighbors -

So, let's make the most of this beautiful day.
Since we're together we might as well say:
Would you be mine?
Could you be mine?
Won't you be my neighbor?
