I never met Steve Jobs; I’ve never heard him speak; I never even watched one of his famous ‘Stevenote’ speeches (the keynote speech given at the Apple developer’s conference). However, I love the art he created – the tools I never knew I needed but now I can’t live without. I’ll miss Steve, and I think the world will be a less beautiful place for all of the creative energy that he embodied.
I have read my share of the tribute articles to Steve; many respected news organizations have dedicated whole issues to this man. What I was most intrigued by was how he was relentless in his pursuit for perfection. He attended to the details and by doing so make products simpler as they became more powerful. While he designed for the masses, he refused to compromise for them either.
Is there a ‘Steve Jobs’ in the insurance industry? Is there a leader among us who is relentless in the pursuit of creating products without compromise? Is there someone who has the vision to help us move into the next decade with products and services that consumers would embrace and value? Imagine insurance that people bragged about!
The funny thing about Apple’s marketing philosophy is there is never an apology about the cost or value of what they sell. I know – when I was in the market for a laptop, I thought surely, I can find a Mac computer on sale – not so. Apple’s belief in what they do is unapologetic! And they don’t put their products on sale. I guess when 4 million iPhones are sold in just 3 days you have nothing to apologize for. I wish selling insurance were like that. Unfortunately, I am not a genius so I can’t get a job at Apple.
For now, I am proud to be a part of the Tuscano Agency – an organization that is building something amazing. Though we probably won’t reach the heights of Apple and my legacy will be nothing like Steve’s, we are building something to be proud of and I keep reminding my staff that their passion and hard work makes them stand out among their peers.
Vacant property has been a core product of the Tuscano Agency for as long as I have worked here – but it certainly has changed over the years! Rates have come down and coverage has gone up. We see many more submissions today than we did 3 years ago and we see many more losses as well. Between hailstorms and copper thieves, we have been very busy. The good news is we have plenty of markets that write this business extremely well with broad coverage options and competitive pricing. If you need coverage on a vacant property whether it is a $50,000 dwelling or a $5 million commercial office space or auto dealership, we are unapologetically, the best in the business!
I have a saying taped to my computer monitor – “Art is when we do our best work”. I think there are people in our business who are insurance artists – maybe you are one of them.
