Watch Out Atlantic Salmon

Newsletter – Tuesday, April 17, 2012

Let the adventure begin! As you read this letter, I will be thousands of miles away fishing in the wilds of Northeastern Canada. My wife and buddies got together and declared that since I turned 50, I need to scratch at least one big thing off my bucket list.

I don’t fish all that much in real life – real life has a way of sucking up all your free time. In my family the hullaballoo over fishing centers on opening day of trout season. You see Bill Tuscano’s second career is in retail. Longbridge Station is the iconic bait & tackle shop (which also sells sheds, Amish furniture, nursery stock, and much, much more) and comes complete with the old guy (Bill) in the rocking chair to shoot the breeze with. Long story short – I’ve spent more time waiting on fishermen (and women) in the wee hours of opening day or packing bait at Bill’s hobby shop than angling on the banks of the Loyalhanna near our home.

My adventure will cancel that out entirely. Today, I’ll be standing on the banks of the Mirimiachi river four hours northwest of Halifax with two of my oldest and best friends. I am going to learn how to fly fish  - watch out Atlantic Salmon! After I catch them I get to release them! Maybe turning 50 won’t be all that bad. I have great friends, a supportive wife, and a bucket list.

There is adventure brewing at the office as well. Submissions are up and we are seeing a lot of ‘churn’ in the market. That alone will not define a hardening market, but it is a start. Similar to planning for winter, it is best to be prepared when markets change. I tell my staff to build relationships now so they are there when you need them, and in a hardening market everyone will need good relationships to get their jobs done.

Tuscano has picked up a new market for Restaurant, Bar & Tavern business. Conifer Insurance Company recently acquired Mid-Continent Insurance Company, a regional carrier and good friends of Tuscano. Conifer is a surplus lines company based in Michigan and will be partnering with MCIC to bring their specialty products to the Mid-Atlantic region. One of the unique features of Conifer’s RBT program is their willingness to write liquor and A&B coverage. Check with one of our package team underwriters for more details and to discuss your next hospitality risk.

Spring is in the air and that means is it motorcycle and boat season. It’s also time to dewinterize seasonal homes. We have markets that love to write dwelling business as well as secondary homes - even in coastal areas. Tuscano CAN do it!

Wish me luck in the Atlantic Northeast! Here fishy fishy!
