Accounting Changes

Newsletter – Tuesday, May 1, 2012

Do you know why the Tuscano Agency writes trucking and how it became a core product of ours? Before my dad Bill was an insurance field rep, he drove truck, first as a teamster and then for Sun Oil. His route took him from Pittsburgh to New York City. Dad still fancies himself a trucker – so I guess it is a good thing we love writing those truckers - young and old!

Of course Bill Tuscano retired nearly 20 years ago and there was no questioning that route. He was going to collect his Social Security (by golly) and that was that! Jinny and I may not have that option. I am pretty sure that with Social Security in the state that it is in, I won't retire at 65 and I feel really sorry for my employees that will have to put up with me until I am 70! At any rate, who can tell what the Social Security trust fund balance will be and whether the program will continue unchanged 20 years from now. While we want things to stay constant, we know that surely they will change.

Change is the topic of this newsletter. Some things around here are changing and we have a clear strategy to not only take advantage of technology, but also to provide better service to you. As long as I can remember, we have been mailing your account current statement at the beginning of every month unless you had a credit balance. In that case, there would be a 7 to 10 day delay while we cut all of our credit checks. We are going to be changing this procedure, so please take note and pass this information along to your bookkeeping staff.

As of this month, we will be mailing all of our statements, both credit and debit. If you have a credit balance, we will mail your credit check the following week and the check will be accompanied by a disbursement report – you will already have your statement in hand.

More good news – you can opt-out of receiving paper statements by mail. We now have the ability to turn off the printed statements for any agency who would prefer to retrieve their statement from our website. While you have had the ability to retrieve your statement online for several years, we did not have a way to support the option to stop the statement from printing, and therefore mailing. Now we do! Simply email accounting@tuscano.com if you want to opt out of the paper statement, or you can go online and select this option yourself in the user admin area of our website. We will continue to send an email to your designated accounting contact when the statements are available to retrieve.

By now, you must also be wondering why we still print and mail this newsletter? Joady Hill, our print and advertising director, has put me on notice; she is heading for semi-retirement and has informed me that when the newsletter print stock is gone, we will be switching to email-only delivery of the newsletter. Don’t you just love saving those trees?

I might as well shamelessly promote wood and lumber products while I am wrapping this up. Tuscano has a great program for wood product manufacturing that can cover all lines, including the Work Comp. I much prefer my trees turned into building materials and furniture, don’t you?

Some things won’t ever change – Tuscano CAN do it!
