A Favorite Teacher

Newsletter – Monday, July 2, 2012

I love it here in Southwestern Pennsylvania – I love the rolling hills, the green forests, the streams and lakes. I love Pittsburgh and the sports teams, the food and the arts. I love jaywalking, our funny slang, and craft beer. And I love the people from all over PA – they/you are the best! Although I know some pretty amazing insurance people, my heart goes out to teachers and the people who invest their lives in our next generation. Everyone has a favorite teacher – I just happen to have one who came into my life well after I finished school.

Cindy (Mrs. ‘P’) chose the teaching profession as a second career. She originally went to school for engineering and received degrees from Stanford and Cornell – obviously one very smart lady. When Cindy and her husband started a family she chose to work ‘inside the home’. When her youngest went off to elementary school, Cindy went back to college to become a math teacher – and not just any math – calculus. She is the kind of teacher who does math problems for fun.

Cindy was honored recently as an outstanding teacher and was invited to fly with the Blue Angels while they were in town for the Westmoreland County Air Show last weekend. Cindy spent forty minutes in the F/A-18 Hornets doing everything from a simulated bombing run to pulling 6 G’s. Talk about living in the fastest lane! I believe teachers like Cindy need to be recognized for the great work they do, the sacrifices they make, and the incredible responsibility they carry helping the youth in our communities see the potential in life and reach for the stars. Somewhere in your life there is a teacher – when you next run into one, be sure to say thanks!

By the time you read this, we’ll be into the second half of 2012! It’s funny how insurance people are conditioned to ask, “How’s your year going?” What we really mean is how much are you growing? Well I will be very candid and say we are having a very good year. We are growing and seeing a lot of the business we know we can write – trucks, contractors, day care, professional liability, liquor and restaurants. No one seems willing to say that the market is turning, but I think that at minimum we are seeing some ‘course correction’. Tuscano is well positioned with great markets, exceptionally talented staff, an amazing service department, and a broad underwriting ability. Call us!

On a side note, I want to remind you that yes, Tuscano can write your out-of-state or multi-state account. With the new NRRA laws, licensing is not nearly so much of an issue as it once was, and many of our carriers are supporting us as we branch out along the East Coast. However, as careful as we are to abide by state laws and regulations, that doesn’t mean you get a ‘bye’ on licensing. Remember, if you are asking us to quote a risk, you are inferring that you are licensed to write that risk in the state the risk is domiciled. Every good pilot runs through their checklist before they hit the ignition. You should do no less and that includes checking your licensing!

As fast as this summer is going, be sure to slow down and enjoy your corner of the earth and sky.

Have a great Fourth!
