A Person Can Learn A Lot From A Dog

Newsletter – Monday, October 1, 2012

It is a well-known fact that the most popular ‘employee’ among our staff is my sister’s dog Brie. Brie is a Bernese Mountain Dog  who comes to the office with my sister Joady.  Brie lays outside her office door, and when she sees someone coming down the hall her tail will start to thump and you just have to go say hi and give her a scratch behind the ears.  When Joady walks through the office, Brie is on her heels and of course we all stop what we are doing to say hello. She is without a doubt our office sweetheart.

I would classify myself a ‘dog person’ (as opposed to a cat person, but hey don’t hate me because of it). I’ve had big dogs most of my life and have enjoyed walking in the woods and being outdoors with a great companion. However, a few years ago we found ourselves dog-less and I just assumed that was the last of the pets we would own. I was surprised when my wife announced she needed a companion and I thought I was getting replaced!  Instead, we brought home a pound puppy!  Sid is a great little dog with a big personality, but he has one major flaw - he likes to run away.  I am beginning to wonder, is it me or are the smells over that next hill just too interesting to resist?

So what about the old adage that you can’t teach an old dog new tricks?  For you old dogs out there I am hoping you won’t have trouble adapting to our new paperless newsletter format.  My sister Joady has been warning me that we are coming to the last of our newsletter stock and when we did, she is going into semi-retirement.  Since we’ve been emailing and posting the newsletter on our website for several years, that’s not new.  But, for the past 25 years or more we have been printing the newsletter and including it with our month-end statements as well – alas, it will be no more.

Just like dogs, vacant properties comes in all shapes and sizes. No matter what state the economy is in, there will always be a need to insure buildings that are vacant or unoccupied. This is a class of business that Tuscano has excelled at over the years and really helped our agency to grow.  It's not just another class of business for us - it's like a lost dog that has come home!  For dwellings, you ought to try our online quoting.  You can get a quote in minutes and even bind online!  If you have commercial properties, Tuscano underwriters love to work with you to put together a proposal with great coverage options. Whether the property is for sale, under renovation, in a PC 9 or 10, or even in foreclosure, we will get a great quote into your hands quickly.

Summer’s over and Fall is in the air.  Don’t run away from special event accounts.  We write haunted houses, corn mazes, community events, and more.  We’ll even insure a dog show!
One of my favorite movies is Marley and Me, based on the book of the same title by John Grogan. Here’s a little excerpt to keep you optimistic.

“A person can learn a lot from a dog, even a loopy one like ours. Marley taught me about living each day with unbridled exuberance and joy, about seizing the moment and following your heart. He taught me to appreciate the simple things- a walk in the woods, a fresh snowfall, a nap in a shaft of winter sunlight. And as he grew old and achy, he taught me about optimism in the face of adversity. Mostly, he taught me about friendship and selflessness and, above all else, unwavering loyalty.”
