My editor (yes, I do have an editor for the newsletter) hates it when I write about politics and who can blame her? But I figure if I am going to spend a couple of hours writing this letter twice a month, then I should get to invoke the ‘Andy Rooney Rule’ and say what I think. Half the time what I am thinking about is what I heard on the radio on the ride in to work – so don’t blame me – blame NPR.

 

I was fairly moderate in my position all through election season because I don’t believe that any political or social position is 100% truth. I’m an empathetic person and find it easy to put myself in another man or woman’s shoes. I was longsuffering through the fiscal cliff fiasco because honestly, I was emotionally drained by the recent election. Now as we face yet another deadline over the debt ceiling I am shocked over the recent proposal to simply mint a trillion dollar platinum coin, walk it down to the Federal Reserve, and use it as collateral to increase their credit limit.

 

I wonder if American Express would let me do that? OK – I realize that the idea was pulled from the table and that our leaders realized that a crisis avoided is not a crisis averted. But seriously – it shames me to think that the idea was ever contemplated.

 

I’ll tell you what I am not ashamed of – that’s the staff here at Tuscano. Their consistent service and dedication to building relationships with you is what keeps us growing and hitting the mark. We had our best year ever in 2012 and I expect that 2013 will be another banner year. I want to thank you, our customer for making this possible. One of the tenets of our mission is to only do business with the best organizations, and that would definitely be you.

 

While success is not all about programs, it certainly doesn’t hurt to have great markets and products. You’ve seen and heard our motto – Tuscano CAN Do It. That is not only our attitude about getting things done well - it is a reflection of our ability to meet your brokerage needs. Every week we get hundreds of inquiries about whether we can write this class or another. Yes we can write Pest Control, Alarm Installation, Mixed Occupancy buildings, along with a commercial umbrella for the same. Yes we write Professional Liability, Personal Lines, and monoline Work Comp. And we are just as good on the $500 MP account as we are on the $250,000 multi-line, multi-location risk. We are going into our 43^rd year and all of the things we’ve done until now have been foundational to building our 100-year company. Even after I am long gone, Tuscano will be a great partner and will be led by more talented people than me.
